Where might a civil servant or other operative in a bureaucracy find forms and precedents of writing to communicate effectively? The answer is in Write On, Civil Servant. The book is a corporate communications manual intended to inspire civil servants to reclaim their place as source of effective, occupational writing. It highlights the anguish of poor orientation in written communication in the civil service and situates written communication as the bureaucratic norm. The author provides practical examples of expository writing and the art of minuting, which are the principal forms of writing in the civil service. It is thus a book of precedents and forms of bureaucratic writing. He also addresses issues and challenges of writing confronting the civil servant – grammatical, social, psychological, and technological – now and in the future. Although the civil service (servant) is the primary target of the text, an operative in any bureaucracy would find it relevant since the patterns of operation are similar.
